My Mission...

“In class, my goal is to spark the students’ interest in the African dance-music diaspora, and leave them with a desire to investigate more. While I do this, I demonstrate excellence, enthusiasm and consistency while having a clear impact on the knowledge and abilities of my participants whether in a classroom or during workshops and performances.”

Student Testimonials

I had so much fun in Dr. Nyamuame’s class. He is very passionate about dance and sharing his culture. I was always excited to go to class and rejuvenated when I left. He gave us multiple opportunities to perform and show off what we had learned. Dr. Nyamuame is very friendly, and makes an effort to really get to know students. He asks students about themselves, even in a class with 50 people. He recognized how much I enjoyed dancing and gave me opportunities to lead the class in stretches and warmups. Students would often come back to visit him in class, which is a testament to Dr. Nyamuame’s warmth and talent and an educator. I recommend the class to all of my teammates on the step team.

Having class with Professor Elikem genuinely made my junior year spring semester more enjoyable. In Intro to Africana Studies, it was evident that Professor Elikem was always prepared for class with extensive knowledge about the course material, and in Beginning African Dance, was passionate about teaching and interacting with his students. With an always easygoing and positive attitude, Professor Elikem reminded me to not take things too seriously, and that going to class can be fun yet informative as well. I would highly recommend taking a class with Professor Elikem, as he makes the classroom environment enjoyable and carefree, something often lost or forgotten in college-level courses.

Student in Introduction to Africana Studies and Beginning African Dance

African Dance was undoubtedly one of my favorite classes here. Dr. Samuel Elikem was passionate about what he taught, which piqued our interest in learning to dance. He was patient, encouraging, and supportive of individuals who struggled to learn the different dancing styles. He made obscure dance styles interesting and enjoyable to perform. One of my favorite moments was when my class was featured on a PBS show, which was an amazing opportunity and not something I would have expected from an introductory college dance course. I had always loved and enjoyed dancing, but Dr. Samuel Elikem taught me to appreciate and enjoy new genres that I had not previously learnt.
